Egypt Itinerary: 5, 7, 10 & 14 Days in Egypt (2026–2027)

Planning an Egypt itinerary is mostly about choosing the right pace. Egypt’s headline sights are spread between Cairo and Giza in the north, Luxor and Aswan along the Nile, and the Red Sea coast. A good route leaves enough time to enjoy the temples, tombs and museums without turning every day into a race.

This guide compares realistic 5, 7, 10 and 14-day routes for first-time visitors. Use it to decide how long to stay, where a Nile cruise fits, and when it makes sense to add Hurghada, Alexandria or Abu Simbel. If you would rather start with ready-made options, browse our Egypt tour packages.

These are suggested planning routes, not fixed departure schedules. Arrival and departure days count toward each trip length. Confirm domestic transport, cruise departure days and available sightseeing time before booking; a late arrival may require an extra night.

How Many Days Should Your Egypt Itinerary Include?

For a first visit, five days works for a focused Cairo-and-Luxor trip, seven days covers more of the classic highlights, ten days gives you room for Cairo plus a proper Nile journey, and fourteen days lets you combine ancient Egypt with a slower Red Sea or Alexandria extension.

5-Day Egypt Itinerary: Cairo, Giza and Luxor

With five days, focus on two bases instead of trying to cover the whole country. Spend the first part of the trip in Cairo and Giza, then continue to Luxor for the great temples and royal tombs.

Days 1–2: Cairo and Giza

Start with the Giza Plateau and the Sphinx, then allow time for a major museum and historic Cairo. Saqqara can be added when your arrival and departure times allow. Keeping your first two days geographically focused reduces unnecessary driving.

Days 3–4: Luxor

Fly or travel south to Luxor. Divide the sightseeing between the West Bank—home to the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple and the Colossi of Memnon—and the East Bank, where Karnak and Luxor Temple are the major highlights. Explore more ideas on our Luxor tours and destination page.

Day 5: Departure or onward travel

Use the final day for a relaxed departure, an extra Luxor visit, or an onward connection. Five days is not the best length for combining Cairo, a full Nile cruise and the Red Sea; saving one of those experiences for a longer itinerary usually creates a better trip.

For individual sightseeing days within your five-day route, explore our private Giza Pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum day tour and full-day East and West Bank tour in Luxor. These are separate excursions, not a complete five-day package; accommodation and intercity travel need their own arrangements.

7-Day Egypt Itinerary: The Essential Highlights

A week gives you more flexibility. One route combines Cairo, Luxor and Aswan; another pairs Cairo and Luxor with a short Red Sea stay. The right choice depends on whether archaeology or beach time matters more to you.

Days 1–2: Cairo and Giza

Visit the pyramids, Sphinx and key Cairo sights, with Saqqara or historic Cairo added according to your interests.

Days 3–4: Luxor

Spend two days across Luxor’s East and West Banks. This is enough time for the essential monuments without squeezing both sides of the Nile into a single rushed sightseeing day.

Days 5–6: Aswan or Hurghada

Choose Aswan if you want to continue the ancient-Egypt route, including Philae and the distinctive scenery of the southern Nile. Choose Hurghada if you want a change of pace on the Red Sea after several intensive sightseeing days. Our 7-day Cairo, Luxor and Hurghada tour shows how the history-and-coast combination can work.

Day 7: Departure

Plan the last day around your international flight and avoid relying on a tight same-day domestic connection whenever possible.

10-Day Egypt Itinerary: Cairo, Nile Cruise, Luxor and Aswan

Ten days is a practical length for travelers who want both Cairo and a meaningful Nile experience. It gives you more room for transfers and allows the journey between Luxor and Aswan to become part of the holiday rather than simply another transport day.

Days 1–3: Cairo and Giza

Use three days for the Giza Plateau, museums, Saqqara and the historic districts of Cairo. This also gives you some flexibility if your international flight arrives late.

Days 4–8: Luxor to Aswan and the Nile

Continue south and combine Luxor’s major sites with a cruise route toward Aswan. Nile itineraries commonly include stops connected with Edfu and Kom Ombo before reaching Aswan. Compare options on our Nile cruises page.

Day 9: Aswan or Abu Simbel

Spend more time in Aswan or use the day for Abu Simbel if it fits your schedule and travel style. Avoid treating Abu Simbel as a compulsory box to tick if adding it makes the rest of your itinerary unnecessarily rushed.

Day 10: Return and departure

If your international flight leaves from Cairo, consider returning there on Day 9 and staying overnight. An Abu Simbel excursion may require an extra day if it leaves insufficient time for that transfer. Use Day 10 for departure, with the final schedule matched to your confirmed flights.

For an alternative ten-day route that also includes beach time, see our 10-day Cairo, Nile cruise and Hurghada tour. It sails from Aswan toward Luxor before continuing to the Red Sea, so its route differs from the example above.

14-Day Egypt Itinerary: Nile Valley Plus the Red Sea

Two weeks gives you the biggest improvement in pace. You can see the classic archaeological route and still include several days that are not dominated by early starts and long sightseeing schedules.

Days 1–4: Cairo, Giza and nearby sites

With four days, Cairo can include Giza, Saqqara, major museums, Islamic Cairo and Coptic Cairo without forcing everything into one or two exhausting days.

Days 5–9: Aswan, Nile cruise and Luxor

For a Hurghada extension, consider starting this part in Aswan and finishing in Luxor. This places you closer to the onward Red Sea transfer. Fit the cruise into its confirmed sailing schedule and use any remaining nights on land; the exact balance depends on embarkation days and included sightseeing.

Days 10–13: Red Sea or Alexandria extension

Allow part of Day 10 for the transfer from Luxor to Hurghada, then enjoy time by the Red Sea. If you depart internationally from Cairo, plan your return connection on Day 13 rather than treating all four days as beach days. Travelers choosing Alexandria should route back through Cairo and allow time for the onward journey. See our Hurghada travel options when planning a coast extension.

Day 14: Departure

Keep the final day simple and leave enough time for the connection to your international departure airport.

For a complete two-week package covering both Alexandria and the Red Sea, explore our 14-day Cairo, Alexandria, Nile cruise and Hurghada tour. Compare its published schedule with the flexible route above to decide which pace suits you.

Should Your Egypt Itinerary Include a Nile Cruise?

A Nile cruise makes the most sense when you have enough time to combine it with Cairo rather than sacrificing the capital’s essential sights. For many first-time visitors, a longer itinerary allows Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan to fit together naturally. Travelers with only five days may prefer land-based sightseeing in Cairo and Luxor.

Should You Add Hurghada to Your Egypt Itinerary?

Hurghada works particularly well after Luxor because it changes the pace from temples and tombs to the Red Sea. It is easier to justify in a 7, 10 or 14-day trip than in a five-day itinerary. The coast can also provide useful downtime for families and travelers who prefer a mix of sightseeing and relaxation.

How to Choose the Right Egypt Itinerary

Start with the experiences you consider essential, then build the route around them. If the pyramids and Luxor are your priorities, five to seven days can work. If a Nile cruise is essential, allow more time. If you also want the Red Sea, Alexandria or a slower pace, ten to fourteen days is more realistic.

Also consider arrival times, domestic connections, hotel changes and the amount of early-morning sightseeing you are comfortable with. A route with fewer bases can often feel richer than a longer checklist with constant packing.

For an official overview of the river route and its main sightseeing stops, see the Egyptian Tourism Authority’s Nile cruise guide. Check the selected ship’s actual itinerary before booking; sailing days and included visits vary.

Egypt Itinerary: Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days enough for Egypt?

Seven days can cover the main highlights if you keep the route focused. Cairo plus Luxor and either Aswan or Hurghada is more realistic than trying to include every major destination.

Is 10 days enough for Cairo and a Nile cruise?

Yes. Ten days gives you considerably more flexibility to combine Cairo with Luxor, Aswan and a Nile cruise while allowing time for transfers.

Is two weeks too long in Egypt?

No. Fourteen days allows a slower route and makes it easier to combine the Nile Valley with the Red Sea, Alexandria or additional time in Cairo and Luxor.

Should I start in Cairo or Luxor?

Many international itineraries naturally begin in Cairo because of flight connections, but the best direction depends on your flights, cruise schedule and final destination. The route can also work in reverse.
